More From Johnannesburg

More from Bob B
"Up and at it early this morning at 700-830 am.

Marion and I had a TV interview with SABC2 here in Jo'Burg.

Marion performed "Suede" from his "Player's Club" disc and it is from the last time, we did "South Beach" together, our signature composition from his 1995 disc "Body Rhythm".

There was no keyboard, thus the solo sax selection...on "SB", we got creative...I did my best Al Jarreau impersonation and scatted the bassline with Marion.

Hmmmm...may need to incorporate that in our show this weekend at Bassline in Jo'Burg.

From what I've heard so far, Marion and I are the only American musicians in town so far. We are using South African musicians which afforded us to come in a few days early, to soak, in all of the positive energy of SA".

What's The Word ? Johannesburg !

Yeah I had to borrow that one from Brother Gil Scot Heron.

Bob B on the way to Jo'Burg SA
Met Marion at JFK Friday morning and we embarked on a 13.5 hour flight to JoBurg.
Business Class was lovely....the food was actually quite nice. Had a nice decaf coffee with brown sugar and some warm milk and slept pretty good in spite of sleepless infant, that entertained throughout the flight.

The Rosebank Hotel is quite nice..picked up by Crowne Plaza. Nice lobby area.
Found a mall nearby, walked in with Marion to a CD store and believe it or not, CD's are actually doing quite well. Unfortunately, there were no Bob Baldwin nor Marion
Meadows cd's in the shop...we were both hot! Cured that problem immediately and
provided some copies to the store for sale...before the end of the day, we were told
that those copies were actually almost sold out today, which is a good. Nothing like news markets and new audiences!

Not a bad first day. Stuck with seafood and salad on day one, bottled water
and lemonade. Life is good. Outside of a TV interview, there's one more day off and Monday, we hit the ground running....the musical foreign exchange will be in full effect as we will be rehearsing Monday and Tuesday with Vusi Khumalo's band. He's got the right vibe, so the exchange will be lovely!

I'm leaving on a jet plane"...to Johannesburg, South Africa.

It's good to have friends in cool places. One of my childhood family friends, who picked up a few photo tricks from my dad, happened to move there from Westchester County, NY. He built the bridge for me to come down there in 2000 with my good buddy Marion Meadows.

We started a band in SA, Vusi Khumalo on Drums and had a blast. We'll be doing the same next week on August 28-29, at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival.

The last time I visited there, I was inspired to write the song "Ukuphila" (The Healing Song).

If the past is any indication South Africa is definitely my muse!

The UK will be next, as I will join musical forces of Nu-Groove label mates Steve Oliver and Michael Lington.

We will be jamming at the legendary Pizza Express on Sept. 9-13. If you live in London join us for some great music.

New music is in the mix in the New Urban Jazz Lounge and is on its way to a stage, radio show and CD, so stay tuned to this blog and our web site www.newurbanjazz.com for more information and samples of what's to come.

Last but not least we truly appreciate the support you have been giving our CD "Lookin; Back" which has been holding it's own at Billboard.

For those of you that have not had the opportunity to pick up a copy visit www.newurbanjazz.com and order your copy today, as there are plenty in stock....
